FROM NEVADA, FOR NEVADA
Tim is a proud third-generation Nevadan, Las Vegas native, and Clark County School District graduate. Growing up in a working class family he learned the value of persistence and giving back to others – values that have been at the center of his personal and professional work.
Fueled by his belief in the potential of young people, after graduating from college Tim became a middle school science teacher and taught in several Title I schools. Through building relationships with his students and their families, Tim gained a deeper understanding of the challenges facing our communities.
Determined to create the conditions where more students would have the opportunity to achieve their full potential, Tim later became the principal of a middle school and also developed several teacher recruitment and preparation programs across the country.
In his current role as a leader at a national education non-profit, Tim supports schools and districts across the Western US to improve outcomes for students. Through this work he has developed an in-depth understanding of many important topics in education, including: recruiting and developing teachers and leaders, improving instruction, early childhood education, supporting multilingual learners, and school turnaround. Tim has also worked to give back to his community by serving on various local boards and committees.
Tim was elected to the NV State Board of Education in 2020 and in this position has been a fierce advocate for kids and families. He has brought his knowledge and expertise around effective approaches to education to influence the actions we take in Nevada.
Tim graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno with a degree in biology. He also holds masters degrees in science education from Johns Hopkins University and in school leadership from Cal State East Bay.
When he is not obsessing over how to improve outcomes for our students, you can find Tim relaxing and hanging out with his family and friends, hiking with his partner Nichole and their dogs, or working on home improvement projects that never seem to turn out quite right.
